The most important thing that I have learnt on my journey sounds cliched, but you will only get out of something what you put into it. If you want a healthy body and a healthy self esteem, it's not going to magically appear, but the sense of achievement and pride in setting out to achieve something and then obtaining it, is priceless.
Before
After
I changed my lifestyle in the following ways:
Here's what I did:
Food wise, we have cut down on how much meat our family consumes. Also, as the person who stocks the cupboards & cooks the food, I no longer keep anything but healthy choices in our home. Our children know to reach for fruit, yogurt or nuts for a snack. When it comes to exercise, I have started doing resistance training & running and have now entered myself in a half marathon. My behaviour has also changed, previously I was an emotional binge eater but now I really think 'why?' before I eat.
Weight loss isn't just about me, it also impacted the people around me.
The biggest impact on my weight loss was on my husband and children. My husband lost 5kgs just by eating what I was eating, and my children are learning about how healthy food makes healthy brains and bodies. My son loves to ask me "Mummy, is this a sometimes food or an everyday food?" My weight loss also motivated my Mum to join weight watchers and has lost nearly 10kgs so far.
Motivation kept me going!
Truthfully, just being healthier and achieving running goals as well as weight loss goals were motivation enough.
There are things I can do now that I could never do before
I can now run for over 2 hours at a time, I also willing get up at 5am before the family wakes up to go for my runs - that would never have happened in the past!
Losing weight is not always a serious business
Some mornings I do weights and push ups and so on, my 4 year old son must have been watching me and felt inspired. Later on I walked into our lounge room and found him eating his weet bix by having the bowl on the ground and doing a push up to get a mouthful. I asked him what he was doing and he said he wanted to be as strong and healthy as mummy!
